Die medizinische Betreuung im Taubensport ist traditionell auf die Heilung kranker Tauben ausgerichtet. Häufig werden Medikamente bereits präventiv eingesetzt. Durch das hohe Infektionsrisiko während der Flugsaison ist der Einsatz von Medikamenten oftmals unabdingbar. Der Taubensport ist ein Spitzensport. Bereits kleinste Abweichungen können zwischen Sieg oder Niederlage entscheiden. Die heutige Gesetzgebung erschwert eine professionelle medizinische Betreuung im Taubensport. In diesem Buch werden die Grundlagen für die Stärkung der allgemeinen Abwehrkräfte erörtert. Zugleich werden die Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, die zur Verfügung stehen, um die Abwehrkräfte der Tauben nachhaltig zu verbessern und die (zunehmende) Abhängigkeit von Medikamenten zu verringern.
The book makes clear that in addition to the care of sick animals in particular the health care of the pigeons attention should be given enhanced. Tierarzt Dr. Peter Boskamp studierte Tiermedizin an der Reichsuniversität Utrecht in den Nierlanden. Nach seinem Abschluss war er für verschiedene Kliniken tätig, unter anderem in einer Praxis im Amsterdam, die auch die medizinische Betreuung im örtlichen Zoo Artis übernahm. Er verließ diesen spannenden Arbeitsplatz, um gemeinsam mit einem Kollegen eine Praxis für Haus- und Nutztiere in Woerden (NL) zu übernehmen. 1987 beschloss er, mit seiner noch jungen Familie in die Gegend seines Geburtsortes zurückzukehren. Im südlimburgischen Beek (NL) gründete er 1987 ein Zentrum für Tierheilkunde (Diergeneeskundig Centrum Beek). Zurzeit arbeiten hier ca. 20 Mitarbeiter, darunter 5 Tierärzte.
