KLAUS history of grit stone

The founder of the company, Otto Klaus, started keeping pigeons in 1918 at the age of 10. Through careful observation he found that, in addition to food and water, the pigeons showed a special liking for substances containing minerals, small stones and the like. The desire for these substances increased during the rearing of the young. Since such materials suitable for feeding were hardly available at the time, Otto Klaus began to bake so-called pigeon bricks for his pigeons around 1926, after years of racing pigeons. At that time, these consisted of a mixture of clay, earth, sand, small stones and some salt. Initially, these "pigeon stones" were only made for personal use and good friends. The pigeon stones proved to be particularly important for homing pigeons, as they prevented the animals from ingesting harmful substances such as fertilizers and fertilizer salts (resulting in fatal poisoning) on the fields. By feeding these stones, deficient minerals and grinding stones were offered to the pigeon stomach and organism without endangering the pigeons. Over the next few years, Otto Klaus tried out a wide variety of materials. Since he lived near the Doberg, whose marl had been used to fertilize the fields for a long time, he observed wild birds feeding on the steep walls of the pits. He began to use the fossil-rich mineral rock experimentally and used it to produce the first Klaus pigeon stones. This was definitely an important step in the life of Otto Klaus. In addition, he had hereby made an important discovery for the pigeon sport. The fossil and mineral-rich sediments of the Doberg marl were particularly fond of the pigeons.

Later investigations and opinions of scientists and researchers attest that it is not only a very mineral-rich substance with trace elements, but that this many million years old material of calcified plants and marine animals in a very porous, friable form exists from the pigeons can well absorb the important minerals.

Between 1928 and 1932 began with the sale of Klaus-doves stones, as demand grew in intensity by fanciers – to this day.
